Why geniuses do not have jobs

Why geniuses don't have jobs
ISTOCKPHOTO

(MoneyWatch) We have a massive problem with our employment system, which robs companies of great talent, and creates cultures of mediocrity. The problem is that we don't know how to employ geniuses, Why geniuses do not have jobs.

For this blog post, I'm not defining genius as IQ, nor am I saying we're all geniuses. We're not. Thanks in part to the Steve Jobs legacy, "genius" has become synonymous with someone who is smart and able to offer out-of-the-box ideas. The inevitable conclusion is that we're all geniuses in some way.

In this piece, let's define a genius as a person with some ability that would rate a 9 or 10 on a ten-point scale. Genius usually shows up in certain contexts and not others. Someone I worked with recently discovered a gift for "inspiring small technology companies that their work, if successful, can change the world." Because genius is context-specific, the same person probably wouldn't be able to ignite the first spark of inspiration in workers at Walmart, Kaiser, or Starwood Hotels. Genius is often so narrow that it passes unidentified through competency screenings that many companies use to find "the right people; Why geniuses do not have jobs."

The heart of the problem for geniuses -- people who are 9 or 10 at something -- are that they are probably a 2-3 in other areas. Joe Polish is a product marketing genius (9+), especially for items that are novel, fun, or focus on personal development. He charges people $25k to join his "25k club," and people I interviewed from this group report receiving far greater value than they give up when they write that big check. Joe is also stubborn, crass and prone to topic-jump in a way that makes it seem like he's listening to voices we can't hear. His sense of humor alone would make him unemployable in most big companies. So in terms of "playing by the rules," he's a "2" on a good day.

Joe would be a dangerous hire for a company. Yes, he's a genius in product marketing. But the chance that he'd offend someone in a conservative culture is 100% -- in the first week.
So Joe has done what geniuses do -- he went out on his own, crafted his own path, and is running his own company where he gets to make the rules. While this is the right decision for Joe, the fact that every company in the world isn't calling him for help highlights the problem.
In my consulting work, I've met three categories of geniuses.

The first type -- let's call them "gregarious geniuses" -- have an opinion about everything and don't suffer fools (and there are lots of fools in management, so they are often the power structure in companies). And in some area, they have clarity that lets them see through steel. I know gregarious geniuses that can spot a company's strategic flaw so quickly that you wonder if they've been hacking the executives' emails.

And their presentation of the problem implies that everyone involved in setting the initial strategy is an idiot and we should bring back the rack as the only legitimate method of punishment for such epic stupidity, Why geniuses don't have jobs. Gregarious geniuses would make ideal consultants, but are often not hired by firms or clients because they might offend someone. (Wouldn't Yahoo be in better shape if they had a few more geniuses around?) Some teach for a living, critiquing companies in the safe zone of the classroom. Others I know sit at home and watch CNBC, offering critiques that make the talking heads on that show appear to have failed basic finance. Sadly, most gregarious geniuses get fired from companies because they can't control their tongue. Many have ADHD or related problems.

The second category is the "isolated genius." They are at the opposite end of the extroversion continuum, choosing to say so little, making people wonder if they can actually talk. They are usually attracted to technical problems. They don't like teams, and they would rather do work than report on status. When they talk, they do so like an encyclopedia conveys information. Emails get no response or one-word answers. Some may have Asperger's Syndrome or social phobia. Isolated geniuses are rarely hired because they don't interview well. When they are hired, they are usually relegated to solve problems in quiet. Once the fun problems are solved, they often quit. Isolated geniuses may be quiet, but their need for a challenge should be heard as a primal scream.

The third type is the "unpredictable genius." A less kind word would be "unstable." On their good days, they seem like ideal executives -- able to take lots of views into account, plot the best course forward, and exude so much energy, the lights are brighter when they're in the room. On their bad days, they are moody, unresponsive, slow, and pessimistic. They may have bipolar disorder, or something else.

One of the trends you may have noticed is that all three types of geniuses may benefit from professional help. The connection between mental illness and crisis leadership is made in A First-Rate Madness by Nassir Ghaemi -- required reading (in my opinion) for anyone who wants to attract great talent.

So what do you do if you're one of these geniuses? Get someone else to sing your praises. I've done this for many people I've met as students, clients, or through my social tribes. The script to a potential employer goes something like this: "I have a person for you, and she's the best in the world at doing X. Off the charts in her ability. And with great ability comes oddity: Y." If the hiring manager knows the tradeoffs, they'll often do the right thing for everyone by hiring the genius, and then working to minimize the deficits, or clean up messes when they happen.

What do you do if you look at your team and crave geniuses? How do you find them? And how do you deal with inevitable problems that accompany great ability? There are "genius finders." Most aren't in business executive search, they've just build tribes of geniuses. Joe Polish is one such person. Genius finders know other genius finders, so if they can't help you, they probably know someone who can. And yes, genius finders are often geniuses themselves, with their social connections acting as a genius multiplier effect and support group in dealing with a world that understand them. Why geniuses do not have jobs On risk mitigation, here are two suggestions:

First, have clear conversations about what is, and isn't, acceptable -- and plan to repeat that action every week or so. Many geniuses become surgeons, and are famous for throwing temper tantrums or harassing people. That's not ok -- no matter how great the ability. The cost of giving one person a free pass on the rules is to say the rules don't matter. It's also insulting to everyone else, and will drop your culture into the "my life sucks" zone on the "Tribal Leadership scale."

Second, set development goals that bring the person closer to a 4 or 5 on the ability scale in the problem areas. Many geniuses need professional advice, and managers shouldn't play amateur psychologists. Others need someone to help them develop a sense that most of us already have -- like saying inappropriate words in public needs to stop. There are training programs, books, and coaches for just about every type of problem. Overwhelm the genius with offers of help. The message has to be: We value you (the whole person, not just the ability), and we want to help you make this work.
Ever work with a genius? Or are you a genius and find it tough to put your great ability to work? If so, I hope you'll make a comment below.

Now, Let's Take it Further by Breaking Down the 6 Main Elements of a Structured Post Outline...

Element of Speed Blogging Tips Structured Blog Post Outline

This is just an example of a structured outline. But it works very well. The key is to make all of the numbered items very similar and follow a pattern so that you can write your posts very quickly. Get the structured content out of the way first before your "inner perfectionist" starts taking over! Speed Blogging Tips Structured Blog Post Outline Now, let's break down the 6 main parts of this structured outline.

 1. YOUR INTRO:
This is where you grab the readers attention. You should clearly explain what they are going to learn in the post, so that they know they have arrived at the right place. Remember, most people just skim through posts so keep it brief.

2. YOUR ORDERED LIST: Don't think to hard about it. Just break down your topic into a numbered list of some kind. 5 ways to do this, or 11 ways to do that. When you break your content up like this, it makes it easy to read, and easy to learn from. Generally speaking, you should use H2 tags on your ordered list. If you don't understand that, just Google it.

3. YOUR PICTURES:
Most of the time you can grab these from Google Images, unless it's copyright protected stuff. Here are some quick picture tips. When saving pictures to your desktop, rename them, with more relevant titles. Then upload them to your blog, and change the width of the pictures to 100% and leave the height empty. This will automatically fit them across the page. Or make them all 80% to leave a little room. Keep it simple and structured!

4. YOUR PROMOTIONAL LINKS:
Do this last. When you are all done with your article, throw a few "Bonus Links" throughout your post. If you have a lot of posts to promote, then do one bonus link per numbered item. Or every other numbered item.

5. YOUR SUMMARY:
This is where you summarize the takeaway from your article and bring closure to it. This section should be short and straight to the point. Ultimately it should bring everything together and make it easy to understand.

 6. YOUR CALL TO ACTION:
This is easily the most important part of your entire blog post! You should have a specific plan for what you want your readers to do next. Hopefully it's to opt-in to your email list so that you can follow up with them. Is this starting to make sense?

More Explanation from Facebook!
Here is another way that I explained it recently in a comment on my Facebook profile: (which you should subscribe to right now if you haven't yet)

Summary and Related Resources
In summary, this is just one of many blogging styles that you can use.
For me, this works great because I want to quickly put out content on several different websites and keep them active, while at the same time getting great results in Social Media and in Google.
So a structured outline was the solution I was looking for.
Hopefully it's a great solution for you as well!
BONUS: Did you have a chance to get your hands on the Facebook Fan Page Method training that I shared with you earlier?

Whether you are a beginner just getting started with WordPress Blogging, or an Advanced WordPress SEO Expert, hopefully you still find value in this post icon smile 10 Out Of The Box Wordpress SEO Tips to Dominate the Front Page of Google in 2012

1. USE GOOGLE INSTANT SEARCH FOR KEYWORDS

Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013 There are so many seo keyword tools online to use, but at the end of the day one of the simplest tools (and FREE) is to use Google Instant Search. Just type in the main topic of your blog post, in as few words as possible, and see what suggestions Google makes for you. Then figure out a way to use these additional keywords in your title and in your blog post so that your post shows up on more pages when users are searching. Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013 Bonus Tip: After your main keyword phrase, try typing the first letter of each letter in the alphabet to see what search suggestions Google will give to you. For example, if your blog post is about the Google Penguin Update, then try doing a search for Google Penguin A and see what results Google will display for you. In the example below you will see that Google recommends the search results for: Google Penguin Algorithm, Google Penguin Algorithm Change, Google Penguin Anchor Text, Google Penguin and Panda. Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013 You can repeat this process for every letter in the alphabet, and get a long list of very relevant keywords to include in your content for each blog post. And these results come directly from Google, showing you exactly what people are searching for. Pretty Simple.

2. COMMON MISSPELLINGS IN THE TAGS SECTION

Many people ask me what to write in the “tags” section of their blog post. Ideally this spot should be reserved to organize your blog posts into topics that are maybe a little more in-depth that your categories. For example, if the category was “SEO”, then maybe a tag would be “Google Panda“, or “WordPress SEO“. Another unique strategy for the tags section of your WordPress blog posts is to use a few different variations of the word that people might spell wrong when searching for your content. For example, if you are writing a post about the “Google Penguin Algorithm” as mentioned above, then you might consider adding a tag to this post spelled this way: “Google Penguin Algorythm“. You never want to spam your post with empty keywords, but put yourself in the position of the searcher who is trying to find your content. If there is a word that they might misspell (like the word mispell), then you may want to add that to the tags to help them find your content. Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013

3. YOUTUBE EMBEDDED VIDEOS FOR SEO SPEED

In the screenshot below you will see a basic strategy that I have used on many blogs to come up with relevant content for posts, and draft them up extremely fast. I average about 2 minutes per post with this strategy, and it doesn’t require as much focus on each post, so I love this strategy because I can put on a movie, fire up my laptop, and write 20-30 blogs posts during the movie, while still paying attention to the movie! In a nutshell, you find videos on youtube that are relevant to the topic of your blog, then embed them into your blog post, and add a unique title, unique description, and a featured image for the post. You then publish the post, and share it on Facebook or Twitter. There is a lot more to this strategy that I teach in depth in my training webinars, but here is a sneak peek to get started:

4. SOCIAL SHARING TITLES VS. SEO TITLES

Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013Okay, now this is one of the most common mistakes that bloggers make. They use the same title for their blog post when optimizing for search engines and when sharing in social media. In fact, most bloggers don’t realize that they can use two different titles. Here are two simple ways to make this happen. Option #1 – Use an SEO WordPress plugin. There are many options out there, so I don’t really need to recommend any, but perhaps you could try Yoast SEO, or Platinum SEO Pack, or something similar. These plugins create a new field when creating blog posts where you can add an SEO title and description. This feature allows you to gve the official blog post title something creative that is more likely to get shared on Facebook and Twitter, but use the SEO plugin to create a different title that is better for Google search results. For example, if you used my YouTube video embedding strategy above, you could use a title very similar to the actual YouTube video title (but not exactly), and then use an SEO-based title using the plugin. For instance, in my example above I could have made the blog post title: “Steve Jobs vs. Bill Gates Rap Battle“. And then using the SEO plugin I could have titled it “Apple vs. PC Rap Battle Parody Video – Steve Jobs vs. Bill Gates on Epic Rap Battles of History!” As you can see it gives me the ability to make my post title shorter and straight to the point, and my seo title longer and more keyword rich. This was a basic example but I am sure you get the point.

5. LEVERAGE AN SEO-BASED TABLE OF CONTENTS

When writing a blog post, one of the first things you should do is start with SEO in mind. Choose a topic for the post, then use the strategy above using the Google Instant Search Suggestion Tool, and come up with several bullet points to discuss. Start off by making a list of these bullet points. Then wrap them in header tags (usually h1 or h2), and put a paragraph of information below each one, and perhaps a picture of video. This post is the perfect example of this process. Before starting this post I chose a topic (SEO for WordPress), and I outlined 10 strategies. I then broke them into 5 on-page seo tips, and 5 off-page seo tips. This allowed me to break this post into 2 guest posts rather than just one. These Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013 will boost your marketing income and increase traffic to your blog

Fast Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013

My first draft of this post was nothing more than a title, a graphic, and 5 bullet points. Then I previewed the post. From there I simply wrote a paragraph or two under each bullet point, and then previewed the posts again. Then I styled each bullet point with a h1 header tag to separate the points, and added a picture to a few of the paragraphs to give the post more value. You have learn key Secret WordPress SEO Tips To Get Your Blog Rank in 2013 The reason this is an SEO strategy is because Google will see the post, and see your main header points, and will give them more value in the blog post. So if you use good keyword phrases that people are searching for, then you have a great chance of getting ranked well in Google. A good example of this strategy in action is this post here.
These first 5 on-page SEO tricks are just the beginning. Click the link below to read the second part of this article where we focus on the most important part of the process.
